Overstrand Municipality applied for the Blue Flag status for three of its beaches for the 2017/8 season – all of which have been granted this coveted status.

The beaches that have been awarded a Blue Flag are Grotto Beach for the period 1 December 2017 to 30 March 2018; as well as Hawston and Kleinmond Beaches for the period 15 December 2017 to 15 January 2018.

The Municipality was further granted Pilot Blue Flag status for another one of its beaches, namely Castle Beach in Pearly Beach, Gansbaai.  Pilot Blue Flag beaches are those which will be considered for full Blue Flag status once certain criteria have been met within a specified period.

Overstrand is exceptionally proud that three of its beaches have received this renowned award, as too that of the afore stated Pilot Blue Flag accolade.

“This is in line with the Municipality’s strategy to ensure our beaches are among the safest, cleanest and best maintained in the Western Cape,” said Cllr Andrew Komani, the mayoral committee member for Community Services.

Tourism Minister Tokozile Xasa was pictured raising the Blue Flag at the launch ceremony held recently in Jeffrey’s Bay, part of Kouga Municipality.
