Mayor Rabie offers fisherman leeway to provide input on slipway management plans

During a Special Council meeting held on Wednesday, 11 December 2024, Overstrand Executive Mayor, Dr Annelie Rabie, addressed Council regarding an item that was presented at the Mayoral Committee Meeting on 13 November 2024. The item concerned the status of the public launching sites in the Overstrand area.

The item proposed several recommendations regarding the de-registration of certain sites, management during peak times or on a full-time basis, the registration of specific slipways, and the investigation into the management of public launching sites by entities other than the Overstrand Municipality or private parties.

At the December First Thursday event in Pringle Bay, many local fishermen expressed dissatisfaction with the proposed recommendations to the Provincial Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs, and Development Planning.

In response, Mayor Rabie confirmed that the item discussed at the Mayoral Committee will not be forwarded to the Minister for now. Further discussions and engagement with public organisations will take place, and the matter will be revisited after Easter in 2025.

Roleplayers are encouraged to contact their respective ward councillors or send their input to enquiries@overstrand.gov.za, for the attention of the Director of Community Services, Seon Swartz.
