This is once again an appeal to all residents in the Overstrand to only place your bin or bags on the pavement at 07:00 in the mornings on the relevant refuse collection day.

If black bags are left outside and it is not the day for the municipality to pick them up, baboons, birds, dogs and cats rip open rubbish bags and litter is strewn around.

It is essential that home owners take heed and for landlords and letting agents to convey the information to tenants and holidaymakers as well - especially in Pearly Beach where homeowners and weekenders still put their bags on the sidewalk on days when refuse is not removed.

Residents are cautioned that it is a contravention of the Integrated Waste Management By-law to place refuse on their pavements on days other than the scheduled refuse collection days.

Fines will be issued to offenders.

Each household is allowed to place one wheelie bin or four black bags (with the proviso that only one bag may contain garden waste) with domestic refuse on the pavement for removal in areas which the Municipality has not identified as a problem animal area. Containers must be secured with baboon proof locking devices in all areas that the Municipality has identified as problem animal areas.

No refuse bags may be left on pavements in baboon problem areas and please remember to not place excess rubbish bags next to the municipal bins.  Any excessive refuse may be taken to the transfer stations. This would then prevent full black bags from standing around and being destroyed by birds and stray dogs.

The Municipality requests residents and weekenders to make other arrangements regarding garbage disposal on Sundays. It is suggested that an arrangement is made with a permanent resident to make the bins and bags available on the scheduled days for removal.

For the safety of our waste collection staff residents are kindly requested to (as far as practically possible) package or wrap any glass items to be disposed of before placing them in the waste bin or black bag.

Wherever possible glass items should rather be recycled or disposed of at the public drop-off’s and transfer stations.
