Human Wildlife Solutions (HWS) was appointed by Overstrand Municipality to assist with baboon management in baboon affected areas, effective from 1 July 2020 until end June 2023 in a phased-in approach.
The first phase of the programme focused on the Voëlklip troop and taking over the community project in Pringle Bay.
Phase 2 was to add Onrus, Vogelgat and the Betty’s Bay/Kleinmond troop by 1 November 2020.
Kleinmond only has troops for a few weeks a year. It is not expected that there will be any baboons in Kleinmond over the festive season, but if they are seen to be crossing the Palmiet Bridge, they can be stopped and directed back as a short-term solution.
The management of baboons in Betty’s Bay is still uncertain due to lack of consensus in the community with regard to methodology. A workshop to determine the methodology to be used in Betty’s Bay will be held early 2021
Overstrand Municipality encourages residents to join their neighbourhood WhatsApp group for baboon alerts.
The dedicated baboon hotline number for reporting baboons in Hermanus and Pringle Bay is 072 028 0008.
Residents within these areas are encouraged to phone the hotline number to report any baboon sightings and request assistance from Human Wildlife Solutions. At this stage reaction and assistance from HWS is not possible in areas other than Hermanus and Pringle Bay. However, if residents from other areas would like to report baboon sightings, it will assist us to capture information on the movement patterns of the troops so that we can better understand their activities in the areas.
Living on the edge of the Kogelberg Biosphere means there are certain measures we need to take to avoid conflict with the wild animals we have chosen to share a living space with.
Overstrand Municipality's Integrated Waste By-law stipulates that each homeowner, tenant or occupier must use an animal-proof waste container in areas declared by the Municipality as baboon affected areas. Pringle Bay and Betty's Bay are two of these areas.
The Municipality may institute legal proceedings against the owner, occupier, or other person, as the case may be, in terms of the Criminal Procedure Act, 1977 (Act 51 of 1977).
The by-law further states:
1. Bins must be secured with baboon-proof locking devices
2. Do not leave black bags on top or outside a bin
3. No black bags may be left on the pavement
Please ensure that collectables are on the sidewalk before 07:00am on the morning of collection. NO BAGS. Excess refuse must be taken to the transfer station or to the mini drop-off site at the Betty’s Bay library.
