On Tuesday, 12 April 2016 Akhule Mgoqi, a grade-five learner at Zwelihle Primary School, became the proud owner of a brand new school jersey.

Akhule belongs to the Overstrand Whale Boxing Club (OWBC), through which founder and Chairperson Mzi Damesi provides sporting opportunities such as boxing to the townships in the area.

Earlier this year the two met with Executive Mayor, Nicolette Botha-Guthrie.

It was then that the Mayor was filled in on the silver medal that the young boxing dynamo had achieved at a national boxing competition held in Gauteng in June 2015. Moreover, Akhule was also selected to be part of the national athletic squad set to compete at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Durban.

Heartened by the plucky youngster’s story, the Mayor endeavoured to assist by issuing an appeal to the community and local business to aid him and the Club.

Botha-Guthrie also made the commitment to donate a new school jersey to Akhule since the one he wore at the time was rather threadbare and too small.

On receiving the jersey from Resandt, the grateful grade-five learner said, “I will wear this jersey with pride as the Mayor especially got it for me. With winter coming, I know I will be warm and not have to worry about the cold seeping in through the holes like it did with my old one.”

Overstrand Mayor, Nicolette Botha-Guthrie (pictured left) was recently the recipient of a donation from Ish Kaskar, (pictured right) a supercar owner.

Kaskar established Last Lion Lifestyle in February 2015 to create a scalable global platform that could connect other supercar owners, who host and plan events such as rallies as a platform to inspire, motivate & mentor the youth.

Last Lion Lifestyle has formed alliances and is endorsed by a number of top brands in the automotive & aspirational lifestyle space. The organisation has further developed an affiliation with municipalities in the Western Cape and plays an integral part in motivating children from previously disadvantaged communities through the facilitation of various life skills and development programmes.

On receiving the donation, the Mayor said, “Thank you very much for this genenerous donation that will go towards the community-based youth expansion projects I endorse and am involved with.

The Hemel-en-Aarde prescribed burn was conducted – and effectively planned and executed - on Tuesday, 12 April 2016 a part of an Ecological and Fire Safety burn. The fire was completely put out and no smoke was visible after 17:30. A fire engine and crew has patrolled and monitored the fire area through the night to ensure continued public safety.

After receiving numerous complaints, Overstrand Fire & Rescue chief, Lester Smith, wants to make it clear that “we cannot be held responsible for the smoke in the Hermanus area from an illegal fire that was reported to the Overstrand control room at 17:05 in Karwyderskraal on Tuesday, 12 April. I therefore confirm that the Karwyderskraal fire is an uncontrolled fire.

“The cause of the fire is unknown and no permission was granted from my office for a controlled or prescribed burn in that area. We are currently doing our utmost best to contain and extinguish the fire. We also used aerial support on Thursday to contain the flank that burned towards Vermont/Onrus”, he added.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) will be a hive of activity as preparations continue for the 2016 Municipal Election on Wednesday, 3 August.
