The Hemel-en-Aarde prescribed burn was conducted – and effectively planned and executed - on Tuesday, 12 April 2016 a part of an Ecological and Fire Safety burn. The fire was completely put out and no smoke was visible after 17:30. A fire engine and crew has patrolled and monitored the fire area through the night to ensure continued public safety.

After receiving numerous complaints, Overstrand Fire & Rescue chief, Lester Smith, wants to make it clear that “we cannot be held responsible for the smoke in the Hermanus area from an illegal fire that was reported to the Overstrand control room at 17:05 in Karwyderskraal on Tuesday, 12 April. I therefore confirm that the Karwyderskraal fire is an uncontrolled fire.

“The cause of the fire is unknown and no permission was granted from my office for a controlled or prescribed burn in that area. We are currently doing our utmost best to contain and extinguish the fire. We also used aerial support on Thursday to contain the flank that burned towards Vermont/Onrus”, he added.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) will be a hive of activity as preparations continue for the 2016 Municipal Election on Wednesday, 3 August.

Thursday, 7 April 2016: Nicolette Botha-Guthrie, Executive Mayor of the Overstrand, was delighted to act as host at the official launch of the FynArts Wine which resulted from a collaboration between Benguela Cove Wine Estate and Wine Village Hermanus that culminated in the production of 1000 bottles of red and white wine respectively.

The limited supply of Benguela Cove Shiraz 2012 and Sauvignon Blanc 2014 were especially labelled to raise money for the Hermanus FynArts Festival’s Development Fund. 

The objective of the Fund is to broaden the exposure and promotion of the arts to include those who are not able to take part in the Festival due to socio-economic reasons, and to contribute to the promotion and skills development in the sector which could lead to possible job creation in the Overstrand.

Louis Jansen van Vuuren, the 2016 Hermanus FynArts Festival Artist was commissioned to create the label for the inauguration FynArts wine.  In celebrating a French Connection, the thread running through this year’s festival, the design is based on 18th century French Aubusson tapestry cartoons.

The blustering gale-force wind on Thursday, 7 April 2016 did little to dampen the joyful spirits of young Jack Kastner and his party when they met with Overstrand Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie to receive an allocation to the Butterfly Centre in Stanford, where he is a learner at the special needs educational facility.

The Butterfly Centre is one of a number of recipients to benefit from the proceeds raised during the Seartec sponsored Overstrand Golf Day that was held at the Arabella Wine Estate and Country Club in November last year.

Well known ex Springbok rugby Captain Bob Skinstad, a key member of the SuperSport broadcast team where he delivers commentary on both local and international premier rugby events, coincidentally serves as an Executive Director of Marketing and New Business at Seartec.  Moreover he is also the Tourism Ambassador of the Overstrand.

The Butterfly Foundation is a charity organisation established in 2013 by Jami Yeats-Kastner in honour of her then 18-month son, Sam, who tragically passed away in February that year. Yeats-Kastner’s motivation was borne from the need to ensure her son’s life, albeit brief, continued to have meaning, whilst in turn leaving an everlasting impact on the world.
