The Fernkloof Nature Reserve is approximately 1 800 hectares in size, and offers a 60km network of hiking trails that are accessible from various formal and informal entry points along its perimeter. The reserve has always been an open access nature reserve and is not enclosed by a formal fence.
This lack of fencing makes it difficult to manage security, posing significant challenges for law enforcement.
Additionally, some areas within the reserve are rugged and densely vegetated, further complicating efforts to maintain safety. Another challenge is the limited or non existent cellular reception in certain areas, which hinders the ability to quickly and effectively respond to emergencies and assist hikers in need.
In light of recent attacks and robberies targeting hikers, the Overstrand Municipality has joined forces with law enforcement, environmental services, and private stakeholders to improve safety in the reserve. Dedicated teams are now assigned to patrol the area on a daily basis.
The municipality has also closed some of the more remote and challenging trails, primarily the orange route and access to it. Please adhere to this temporary request. A map of the closed areas is available at the Visitor Centre and at strategic locations throughout the reserve. Visitors are required to register their intended routes at the Visitor Centre.
Accommodation establishments are being urged to inform their guests about the recent incidents and promote safe practices, such as hiking in groups and avoiding the carrying of valuable items like jewellery, cameras, and wallets and to adhere to the safety measures of the reserve.
The difficulty in apprehending the perpetrators suggests they are familiar with the reserve, likely hiding until the patrol teams leave, only to emerge along the main roads where they are then picked up.
Both residents and hikers are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals to the SAPS or Law Enforcement for further investigation.
