Hermanus Whale Museum speech contest a huge success

The Hermanus Whale Museum hosted the annual Overberg Region Museums speech contest for Grade 10 and 11 learners earlier today, 13 October 2023 in the Overstrand Municipal Auditorium.

The competition is open to learners who take English as their first additional language.

The speakers represented schools from Bredasdorp, Swellendam, Caledon, Genadendal and Hermanus. Overstrand Municipality’s MMC for Community Services, councillor Ronald Nutt facilitated proceedings.

The top three positions in the Overberg region were taken by Zelnita Samuels (Swartberg Secondary), Alexa Collins (Curro Hermanus) and Matthys Lourens (Swellendam Hoërskool). All the speech topics focus on museums and their importance in our communities.

They will participate in the Provincial gala speech evening on 26 October in Worcester.

The Overberg Region Museums presented their annual English Speech Competition at the Overstrand Municipal Auditorium. Hermanus Whale Museum was the host with Brendell Adams of the Whale Museum and Overstrand Councillor Ronald Nutt facilitating proceedings. Learners arrived from Bredasdorp, Swellendam, Caledon and Genadendal in Hermanus. Overberg talent delivered animated and researched speeches on the value of museums. Zelnita Adams from Swartberg Secondary School in Caledon took the honours with Alexa Collins from Curro Hermanus and Matthys Lourens of Hoërskool Swellendam in the top three.
