Keep Meters clear for Meter readers

Keep Meters clear for Meter readers

Residents of the Overstrand are encouraged to ensure that their meters are always visible and accessible to Meter Readers.

Each month, nearly 40 000 water and electricity meters are read throughout the Overstrand. Unfortunately, many meters have been reported as obstructed by sand, weeds, shrubs, overgrown gardens, or construction work.

Meter Readers have also ‘discovered’ that meter boxes can be hiding places for snakes. On several occasions, they have found snakes either inside the boxes or curled up under the meters.

Additionally, some bulk meters are covered by heavy metal lids, making it difficult for one person to lift them.

Locked Properties and Dogs

We understand that some properties are kept locked for security reasons, which can prevent Meter Readers from accessing the meters. In such cases, the Meter Reader will leave a note informing the consumer that access was not possible.

If your water meter is behind locked gates or if dogs prevent Meter Readers access, you can submit your own reading to the Overstrand Municipality using the Collab Citizen App or via email – preferably on the same day each month. Be sure to include your account/erf number and a clear photo of the meter reading.

In summary, please help our Meter Readers by:

  • Keeping the meter area clear
  • Ensure that dogs (especially aggressive ones) are kept under control
  • Providing reasonable access through unlocked gates
  • Remember that if our Meter Reader cannot access the meter, the account will have to be estimated

The Finance Department aims to read meters every month; however, specific dates for readings at individual properties cannot always be guaranteed.
