Onrus Beach is making history with the hosting of the IBC Bodyboarding World Tour from 18 to 28 August 2022. This is a first for Africa and the organisers are hopeful that the championship can again be held in the Overstrand in years to come.
Overstrand Executive Mayor, Dr Annelie Rabie welcomed bodyboarders from all over the globe to the Overstrand. “The Bodyboarding World Tour gives momentum to the recovery of sporting events, and we are looking forward to this opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Onrus”.
Residents are invited to join the excitement and should follow social media for information on the days of the competition as there will be five competition days during the 10-day timeframe.
Onrus resident, Tristan Roberts, will be showing off his skills on home turf and hopes to see a repeat of winning the world title at the 2019 Association of Professional Bodyboarding World Tour in Gran Canaria. He became the first bodyboarder in the sport’s history to win both the Junior World title (2014) and the Men’s World Championship. Mayor Rabie thanked Tristan for promoting the Overstrand on his tours, for all the efforts made to bring the competition to Onrus. The mayor added “It is encouraging to see the international contestants and hope that the experience will encourage them to return.”
More than a 100 bodyboarders will be joined by a great number of spectators. This is encouraging as preparations are made to celebrate Tourism Month in September.
