The South African Weather Service has extended the level 4 warning for disruptive rain affecting the Overstrand and surrounding towns until Sunday, 14 July 2024.

In addition, there is a level 2 warning for wind and waves along the south-west coast on Saturday, spreading to the south coast on Sunday.

SAWS is closely monitoring Thursday’s cold front (18 July 2024), with potential warnings for disruptive rain and damaging wind and waves affecting coastal towns.

Motorists are advised to reduce speed and exercise cautious on the roads, as the weather is unpredictable and conditions can change instantly. Roads may also close on short notice if necessary.

Apart from the R44 Clarence Drive at the Rooiels Pass, all other major roads in the Overstrand are open.

Assessments are ongoing, and Overstrand Municipal teams are providing assistance day and night wherever necessary and as far as possible.

Water levels have started to subside, but certain low-lying are still waterlogged and will take days to drain.

The area of concern is the Hangklip-Kleinmond area.

Water from the mountain catchment areas continues to flow into the Betty’s Bay wetland system, causing localized flooding.

The electricity supply to the Hangklip-Kleinmond area has been off since Wednesday, 10 July 2024. The repair time is currently unknown but Eskom indicated that the power will only be restored later tonight.

Due to the prolonged electricity disruption, water pumps are not working, and some areas are without water. Where possible, water tankers will be deployed to assist with providing water in those areas.

Residents are urgently requested to conserve water to maintain reservoir levels at reasonable level.
