The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has called for a national shutdown on 20 March 2023. Overstrand Municipality has been alerted that the Land Party will join the EFF on the above proposed shutdown with a protest march in Hermanus.
The proposed date for the protest is also on 20 March which is not a public holiday and normal activities are expected to continue as usual, including all municipal services. It is expected that the march will follow the usual route from Zwelihle to the CBD and/or the New Harbour.
Overstrand Municipality acknowledges the right of everyone to participate in protests and exercise their rights to express themselves. This includes political parties and their affiliates.
However, the Municipality respects the rights of those who will not be participating in protest action and will put measures in place to protect municipal property and to minimise disruptions should they occur.
This will be done in collaboration with SAPS whose role it is to prevent, combat and investigate crime in order to maintain public order, protect and secure the inhabitants of the country and their property and uphold and enforce the law.
This being said, Overstrand Municipality has learned vital lessons on how everyone can collectively protect our communities against any threats. The Municipality therefore appreciates the good working relationship between SAPS and security agencies and neighbourhood watches.
Overstrand Municipality will work with other law enforcement and security stakeholders to put a contingency plan in place to limit the possibility of threats to property and lives.
However, the public and business communities are requested to be vigilant, monitor the situation and ensure that they steer clear of marchers and also to, should the need arise, rather stay safe at home or close the business for that time.
