Public schools’ learners are invited to participate in the Overstrand Municipality’s “Energy efficiency” competition

Overstrand Municipality is excited to invite learners across the Overstrand to get creative and take part in the ‘Energy efficiency and sustainability’ competition.

Schools can stand a chance to receive R10 000 toward energy efficiency initiatives for their schools in three different categories.

The idea is for learners to reflect their understanding of ‘use only what you need’ in order to improve sustainable energy in a poster, video or model.

The ‘use only what you need’ is a more practical approach to improve energy efficiency with easy, behaviour changes that does not necessarily cost you money. Sustainable energy includes all renewable energy sources, such as hydroelectricity, biomass, geothermal, wind, wave, tidal and solar energies that cause no long-term damage to the environment.

Overstrand Municipality is part of the Energy Efficiency and Demand Side Management (EEDSM) programme funded by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy. The Municipality received grant funding for the replacement of streetlighting with Energy efficient LED lighting in all Overstrand distribution areas. Part of the requirements is to spend 1% of that grant funding on creating an energy awareness campaign.

The categories for entry are:

  • CREATE A POSTER: Design a poster that demonstrates your understanding on the concept of Energy Efficiency and Sustainability through art
  • CREATE A VIDEO: Create an informative and creative video that highlights ways that Energy Efficiency reduces the impact of climate change, highlighting the importance of saving energy in our homes, schools and communities. There is no restriction on the number of learners that can participate, however, all learners must be attending the same school that submits the entry
  • BUILD A MODEL: Build a model demonstrating Energy Efficiency and Sustainability in the home, school and community using low-cost materials such as plastic, tin cans and paper etc. to demonstrate their creativity.

Schools are allowed one entry per category.

The closing date for the competition is 31 July 2024.
