RELIEF FOR PERMANENT RESIDENTS IN NAMA STREET AND SURROUNDS

A saving in the electrical capital budget for the current financial year will play a key role in enhancing the dignity of permanent residents in Nama Street and the surrounding area of Zwelihle.

Plans are in place to complete the installation of a dedicated electricity supply for the informal residents living on the municipal land parallel to the last row of houses abutting the informal settlement before the end of the financial year.

Residents in this area of Zwelihle have experienced constant power outages due to the overload on the current infrastructure. This is a result of the numerous illegal connections being made to the electricity grid.

The new electricity infrastructure will serve the first three rows of dwellings in the informal areas situated on municipal land and will include the installation of pre-paid electricity meters.

Mayor Rabie, on a visit to the affected area this morning, 28 March 2025, expressed her satisfaction that this project can be completed earlier than anticipated thanks to the savings. She once again reiterated that everyone who uses a service should pay for that service. She further stressed that illegal connections are dangerous and contributes to the increase in unaccounted for electricity; hence it is important for municipalities to actively works towards reducing them.
