Warning: Do not eat Whale meat

A bryde’s whale washed up on the rocks close to Schulphoek after its carcass was spotted floating in the water near Hermanus Beach Club earlier this morning, 17 May 2023.

Overstrand Deputy Mayor, Cllr Lindile Ntsabo, warned members of the public not to eat the meat as it is unknown why the whale died.

He said apart from the concerns around the reasons why, the meat and blubber are rotten, and people can get food poisoning.

•    Scientists from the Overberg Stranding Network could not confirm the cause of death and unfortunately there is not much left for sampling.
